Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a sideways curve of the spine that has a “S” or “C” shape and frequently causes stiffness and pain.

There are three basic causes of scoliosis. The first is congenital, in other words you have a genetic predisposition to the scoliosis, such as a malformed vertebra. Second, is habitual, which is due to poor posture or behaviors. Third and most common is idiopathic, which means it occurs for no known reason.

Only about 2 percent of the population is afflicted with scoliosis. Scoliosis is more common in females and typically begins in childhood around the ages of 9-12. And if it is detected early, proper scoliosis treatment can prevent it from worsening over time. Early treatment is crucial, left untreated scoliosis can progress quickly and cause problems with the different internal organs, difficulty breathing, and deformities. Once scoliosis progresses to a certain point, orthopedic bracing or surgery resulting in spinal fusion with rods and hooks may have to be done to relief complications.

Many types of scoliosis respond very well to chiropractic care. Our doctors are well trained in examining and treating scoliosis patients. Typically our first goal is to evaluate the overall health of you and your spine and your lifestyle. To further identify the cause of the scoliosis, we discuss symptoms and previous injuries, your family’s history, work-related and recreational activities.
